Plaster of Paris vs synthetic casting bandages: which to import, and when

Casting bandages immobilise fractures, and the choice between plaster of Paris (POP) and synthetic casting tape is largely about cost, market preference and clinical need. For a wholesale importer, both have a place.
Plaster of Paris (POP)
POP is the traditional, economical choice: gypsum-impregnated cotton that wets, moulds and sets within minutes to a smooth, rigid cast. It is inexpensive, easy to apply and remains the default in much of Latin America, Africa and the Middle East, especially in public hospitals and high-volume tenders. Le Roy manufactures POP casting bandages in 5 cm and 20 cm widths, 2.75 m long.
Synthetic / fiberglass
Synthetic casting tape is lighter, stronger, water-resistant and radiolucent, but several times more expensive. It suits private hospitals and markets that prioritise patient comfort and imaging over cost.
Choosing for your market
| Factor | Plaster of Paris | Synthetic |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Low | High |
| Setting | Minutes | Minutes |
| Weight | Heavier | Light |
| Typical buyer | Public hospitals, tenders | Private hospitals |
Widths
Narrow widths (5 cm) suit fingers and small limbs; wide widths (20 cm) suit arms, legs and body casts. A complete POP offer carries both.
